June means Juneteenth

If you don’t know, many African Americans celebrate June 19th because it is known as Independence Day or Freedom Day. On June 19th, 1865 slavery was finally abolished in all the states including Texas. So basically I’m celebrating African Americans all month long. I know personally I can do better with celebrating my blacks so hopefully this will be a start to a new lifestyle. I’m not going to get deep into the history of Juneteenth but check out Juneteenth.com for more information.

This past Saturday, I ended up at 5 black owned businesses in Nashville. I didn’t know they existed, but I couldn’t help but blog about them.

We started at the The Garden Brunch Cafe and this was my second time there. It’s in a small house decorated with art inspired by blacks, and the service during both visits was great. Last time I ordered the cinnamon bon French toast which was AMAZINGGG and this past Saturday I ordered Fish and grits which was also really good. The fish was tilapia which I don’t normally like to eat but it was still really good.

Next my friend took us to Konadu Body Care by Nature. Lately I have been trying more natural foods, body, and hair products. But mainly face wash and moisturizer because my skin is very sensitive. I did just go to TJ Maxx to re- up on soap and lotion so I didn’t have much of a need to purchase anything. However because she was black I still wanted to support. I found some lip scrub that I’ve been meaning to buy, but haven’t because my lips are sensitive to certain products. I purchased the Brown Sugar and Green Tea Mint Lip Scrub and so far I can say it really works.

On the way to Konadu I saw a sign for The Cake Project and their cheesecakes. I love cheesecake so I had to make my way there. Not even knowing that it was black owned, I had plans of buying something anyways. They had a variety of flavors including Banana Pudding, Raspberry Lemonade, Strawberry, Key Lime, and I ordered the red velvet. The mini mansion jar was unique and the cheesecake was delicious.

We asked if their were any other black businesses around because two seemed like a lot for the area we were in. Then he told us about Artaya Loka which is a clothing boutique and Eastside Nail Salon. I didn’t buy anything from Artaya Loka or get my nails done but both owners were very friendly so I plan to go back.

All month of June I am looking to buy black and want to create awareness for as many black brands as I can.
